YWAM DTS or Youth With a Mission Discipleship Training School is a 5-6 Month Christian Missionary Training School. Youth With a Mission (YWAM) is one of the world largest missions organizations with over 18 000 full time staff in more than 100 countries in every continent (except Antarctica).

YWAM is a dynamic and fun group of young people who are passionate about knowing God and making him known to all the nations of the earth, and every tribe and tongue across the globe. The great commission is our commission!

If you're aged between 17-35 and interested in finding out your purpose in life and drawing nearer to God then an excellent first step in Christian missions is a YWAM DTS (Discipleship Training School). Join other young people who are on fire for Jesus in taking the next step in their life. A YWAM DTS is a 5-6 month live in school that is run annually in 200+ locations around the world.

"I believe [it] is the most important ministry/program we have in the whole of YWAM, because it is the doorway into the mission and the University of the Nations. It is the foundation for everything, where people are met with faith, where they come to understand the history and values of YWAM; where they are presented with mission opportunities...and it's where their own vision may be fueled."
Darlene Cunningham - YWAM Co-founder

Each YWAM DTS includes a 2-3 month outreach where what you have learnt is put into practice. You'll be stretched and challenged in your relationship with God like never before and you're guaranteed to have many opportunities to see others come to know God as well.

WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF THE YWAM DTS

  • To gather and challenge people to worship, listen to and obey God, releasing them (in the context of the DTS) to serve through evangelism, intercession, acts of compassion and other expressions of God's heart for the world, possibly even pioneering new ministries.
  • To inspire and cultivate growth in one's relationship with God resulting in Christ like character, which is based on a solid Biblical foundation, the work of the Holy Spirit and the personal application of Biblical truth, especially concerning God's Character, the Cross and empowering Grace.
  • To sharpen one's ability to relate to, learn from and work with people, including those of different cultures, personalities and perspectives.
  • To further equip each one to serve God's purposes either in or outside of YWAM Family of Ministries, strengthening a commitment to reach the lost, especially the unreached, to care for the poor, and to influence all areas of society.
  • To impart the vision and foundational values of Youth With A Mission International as well as that of the host operating location and to provide information regarding a variety of opportunities for service.

WHAT IS A YWAM DTS OUTREACH ALL ABOUT?

It's April 22nd. 100 students in YWAM Townsville wake up and realize, today is the day. DTS outreach has begun. They say goodbye to Townsville and their housemates, as each of them head out into the nations to share the love of God. They may not have the poise and skill of a fine preacher. They may not be able to argue Biblical truths with trained scholars. They are not necessarily trained in drama and dance, nor in how to make balloon animals in Sunday School. Perhaps they may seem shy and may stumble over their words a little, but they have hearts to serve. They have zeal. They have sought and found a passion for their God and knowledge of His love.

That love knows no boundaries, no conditions. It cannot be broken, cannot be understood, but it can be accepted. It can be shared. And share it they will. To the poor beggar on the streets of Thailand, crying out for something, anything other than the life he lives each day. They will share it to the lost and empty teenager who has no reason left to live, to the poor orphan girl in East Timor, longing for someone to love her. They will go out there to give. To sacrifice, love, and serve. And they will return more blessed and more fulfilled than when they left.

A Short YWAM DTS outreach story by Justin Watson (Reef to Outback)
I arrived in East Timor excited and ready to begin the outreach. Flying over the land, it was incredible to see the undulating hills of lush tropical greenery unfold beneath me. The whole ride from the airport, I couldn't stop smiling. I was so excited to see kids playing soccer in the streets. This certainly wasn't America.

I soon realized that going and playing soccer with the kids (ranging in age from 7-15) was an excellent way to build relationships with them. Therefore, one afternoon, Chris and I went down to where a group of kids were kicking a ball around and joined them. The kids loved it, soon calling us by the names of our nation's soccer heroes, some of whom we had never heard. Before we knew it, we were going down to a soccer field to play a game. It was so cool - anybody could play. People came from all over when they heard a game was on, especially when they heard that some malai (foreigners) were playing. It was amazing to go from playing soccer on the street to playing a pick-up game with the whole neighborhood. Because of the game many new relationships have started.

HOW MUCH DOES A YWAM DTS COST?

This depends greatly on the YWAM Base that you go to. Most Western YWAM Bases cost around $3000 - $5000 US for a DTS plus some additional costs during the Outreach Phase. If the Outreach is a local one there may only be a small additional cost but if the outreach involves International Travel then this can add up to an extra $2000 - $3000 US.

Other YWAM DTS's being run in developing countries may only cost $1000 - $2000 US or less if you are from a developing nation yourself (Click Here for more information on Fee reductions).

Note : These costs are only a guidline. I would encourage you to seek specific information from the YWAM Base that you would like to go to for your DTS.
